Screen Saver Settings on Your Mac

By default, while on battery power your display is set to turn off after 2 minutes.

Open System Preferences and select Energy Saver:

In the Battery tab, move the slider to the right to increase the time before the display shuts off:

For increased security and to protect your – and your students’ – privacy, set a Hot Corner to put your display to sleep when you are away from your computer. With the new Touch ID, it’s easy to wake your computer back up when you need it!

Open System Preferences and select Desktop & Screen Saver:

On the Screen Saver tab, click on Hot Corners…

Pick a corner (for example, the bottom left), choose Start Screen Saver from the drop-down menu and click OK:

Now, to put the display to sleep immediately when you walk away from your computer, simply move the pointer to the bottom left corner.
